Challenges and Solutions

The platform's original codebase was built by an inexperienced outside developer and wasn't fit to build on directly.

Devatwork audited and took over the existing client-side codebase, fixing and extending it in place rather than committing to a costly full rewrite.

Three distinct user types (merchant, consumer, admin) each needed different, strictly enforced access to platform data and actions.

Built role-based access control on Firebase custom claims, with route-level role checks and per-record ownership checks so a merchant can only manage their own data.

Twelve distinct services (discounts, reservations, last-minute deals, webshop, vouchers, take-away, delivery, newsletters, jobs, QR validation, publicity and chat) needed to work as one coherent platform, not a pile of bolted-on features.

Structured the backend as modular Firebase Cloud Functions, split into API routes, event triggers and shared core logic, so each service can be extended independently.

With merchants spanning many categories, countries and towns, users needed a reliable way to find the right match even with imprecise search terms.

Implemented a search and filtering system based on the Trigram algorithm and Levenshtein distance to surface the best-fit results.

Result

NjamShop now runs as one platform: merchants manage discounts, last-minute deals, reservations, webshop listings, vouchers, job postings and promotions from a single dashboard, and consumers browse and redeem all of it through one login and QR code, instead of juggling separate systems for twelve different services. The modular architecture means new services can be added after launch without reworking the core, so NjamShop can keep expanding its offering without a future rebuild.
