Construction

An AR platform guiding people through Buildwise's building without physical checkpoints. Mapping the site and tracking fire-safety compliance were real gaps. Now staff manage the map and update records right inside the AR view.

Challenges and Solutions

Guiding people through a large building without installing physical checkpoints or beacon infrastructure.

Built the navigation layer in Unity with AR Foundation, using floor and orientation detection so the app tracks position from the camera feed alone.

Digitising a real, existing building accurately enough for indoor navigation to actually work.

Sent developers on-site to scan Buildwise's ground and first floor and process the data into working floor maps covering up to 150 mapped objects.

Buildwise's own staff, not developers, needed to manage venues, floors and objects after launch.

Built a separate admin web portal, using Mapbox tilesets for floor mapping, where non-technical staff can create venues, add floor layers and place objects themselves.

Keeping safety-equipment compliance data, like fire extinguisher inspection records, current across a large site without manual paperwork.

Added a scanning feature inside the AR app so staff can pull up and update an object's maintenance history on the spot, tied to the NBN S 21-050 inspection standard.

Result

The build moved from kickoff to a fully mapped, working app in under nine weeks, on the schedule set out in the original roadmap. Buildwise now has a working indoor navigation layer for its building. Staff manage the map themselves through the admin portal, adding venues, floors and objects as the building changes, instead of relying on developers for every update. Compliance checks that used to mean walking the building with a paper log now happen in the AR view itself, with maintenance records pulled up and updated on the spot.
